TPC Scottsdale's Champions course always will play second fiddle to its famous sister. But the more you play it, the more you'll appreciate its own attributes. Randy Heckenkemper did a tremendous job with the redesign, turning a boring layout into one of the more challenging tracks in the Valley, writes Scott Bordow.

As golf technology keeps progressing and architects on steroids keep designing longer and longer golf courses, it's refreshing to take a step back in time and play a course like Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona. It's a blast from the past, a Robert Trent Jones and Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that was built in 1968 and still holds up today. You won't encounter souped-up holes, blind shots or snooty attitudes, Scott Bordow writes. Oakcreek C.C. is simplicity at its best.

Once you've played its signature third hole, the Mountain course at Ventana Canyon Golf and Racquet Club turns into a gimmick-free, subtle, gently rolling, pure test of desert golf. It's for the best that the famous, 107-yard canyon shot comes so early in the round. It's a show-stopper, but also a pace-slower, writes Brandon Tucker, and not necessarily indicative of the style at this Tom Fazio-designed gem.

Stand on the tees at Eagle Mountain Golf Club in Fountain Hills, and you'll like what you see. Stand on the greens, though, and your view of things changes. Eagle Mountain, a 6,800-yard, par-71 layout, is essentially two courses in one. Designer Scott Miller must have been in a good mood when he laid out wide fairways with mounds on each side that feed wayward tee shots to the short grass.

The western Phoenix suburb of Goodyear is an escape, a place in the shadows of the Sierra Estrella Mountains where city slickers can getaway and play the Golf Club of Estrella. The course is a natural wonderland, David R. Holland writes. The deer and the antelope don't roam here among giant saguaros, but certainly bobcats, coyotes, rattlesnakes and other Sonoran Desert wildlife do.

Just across the parking lot from Dinosaur Mountain is its sister course, the Sidewinder course at Gold Canyon Resort. It doesn't get a lot of love from the national media. But don't mistake Sidewinder's anonymity for kindness. Even though it's a relatively short track at 6,533 yards from the tips, the par-71 course will challenge any golfer.

Any story about the Raven Golf Club at South Mountain has to begin with what it isn't: a desert course. Oh, it's smack dab in the middle of Arizona's native surroundings, but unlike many of its brethren, your ball will never find a saguaro cactus or get stuck under a cholla bush. It IS very possible, however, to be stymied by the thousands of pine trees that were imported to give the Raven a unique look. "It's a golf course in the desert but not a desert golf course," General Manager Travis Fish says.

By the time you get to the first green on the Canada Course at the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort, you get a pretty good idea of what's in store. The vistas and several imaginative holes are probably why the Canada Course is the favorite 18-hole layout among resort guests. There are lots of great views, twists and turns. I really enjoyed this layout, and when you think about it, shouldn't that be the goal of a resort course?

If you like a golf course that rewards shot makers rather than big bombers, SunRidge Canyon Golf Club in Fountain Hills is for you. Accuracy is key, and you'd better be able to hit every club in the bag. All in all, it's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, Scott Bordow writes. As a bonus, it's not as expensive as some of the big-name courses in the area.

Located a half hour east of Sky Harbor Airport, Dinosaur Mountain at Gold Canyon Golf Resort is one of the Valley's hidden gems. Okay, so "hidden" may not be the right word. After all, it's been rated the top public course in Arizona. Still, because it's not part of the north Scottsdale scene, Dinosaur Mountain isn't as well known to out-of-town golfers. It should be, Scott Bordow writes.
