Las Sendas Golf Club had a slope rating of 149 when it opened in 1995. It has since been softened somewhat to 145, with a few desert hazards eliminated. Public courses can be only so difficult. But this Robert Trent Jones Jr. design will still knock your socks off.

Following a $5 million Ken Kavanaugh redesign, the new Longbow Golf Club is an aesthetic triumph over the original. Whether or not the overall design is better is a matter of some debate between low and high handicappers, but it shouldn't be.

It is easy to feel insignificant standing on the tee box of the 18th hole at Las Sendas Golf Club. The endless urban basin that is the "Valley of the Sun" stretches out before you, and the craggy outlines of Camelback Mountain and Squaw Peak rise up from the grid-patterned street system below.

Playing golf during the winter months in Arizona has many advantages...but there are some disadvantages. Some of the advantages are the nice weather and an abundance of beautiful golf courses. The main disadvantage is the cost. Green fees reaching the hundred dollar range and above discourage many golfers.

Armed with your PGA Tour card is the only way to play Las Sendas from the tips. Any golfer with anything else is just plain crazy! A slope of 149 (tops in Arizona), blind tee shots, hazards exactly where you don't want them to be, and well-guarded greens slicker than the backyard Slip'n'Slide is a pretty good summary of what to expect.
