Once you've played its signature third hole, the Mountain course at Ventana Canyon Golf and Racquet Club turns into a gimmick-free, subtle, gently rolling, pure test of desert golf. It's for the best that the famous, 107-yard canyon shot comes so early in the round. By the time you get to the first green on the Canada Course at the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort, you get a pretty good idea of what's in store. The vistas and several imaginative holes are probably why the Canada Course is the favorite 18-hole layout among resort guests. There are lots of great views, twists and turns. I really enjoyed this layout, and when you think about it, shouldn't that be the goal of a resort course?

Day in and day out, members of Hilton El Conquistador Country Club prefer the Conquistador Course among the resort's 45 holes. It's your first clue to play the Conquistador, a challenging layout that features six tee combinations. Omni Tucson National's Catalina Course would be a good golf course if no PGA Tour events had ever been held here. The fact that there have been more than 30 adds some mystique and aura to the 7,262 yards. You'll have nice green fairways to try and reenact the shots of legends and non-legends past, too.

Close to downtown Tucson but seemingly far from civilization, the Coyote course at Starr Pass Country Club is true desert golf, with the blind shots, rocky carries and tee-surrounding cacti to prove it.

Like any other snowbird seeking warmth from the Indiana winter, Notre Dame freshman golfer Steve Colnitis came to Arizona to knock some rust off his chilly golf game during the winter holiday break. What he found at Loews Ventana Canyon was enough challenge to keep him focused on improvement in his game.
