At Stone Ridge Golf Course in Prescott Valley, the coyotes remind you you're not in the Phoenix-Scottsdale resort labyrinth anymore. And that's the point, right? This is the golf complex in Prescott that everyone in Arizona somehow seems to have played a round on, including nearby Valley dweller Quayle. It helps that Antelope Hills hosts enough tournaments (120 a year) to qualify as the unexpected, unofficial golf capital of the state. Prescott is a lot like Bend, Ore., where the building of golf courses has exploded in recent years. Bend is two hours from Portland; Prescott is less than two hours from Phoenix.

Pretty soon golfers may think they're back in Scottsdale when they visit the little town of Prescott (pronounce that "press-kit"), just 90 miles north of Phoenix. That's because the golfing opportunities have taken a giant move forward here in the past few years.

One of the newer places to play in the Prescott area is two-year-old Prescott Lakes, a 1,200-acre, master-planned community surrounding an 18-hole course that covers 150 acres all by itself. There are lakes, natural washes and wild grasslands here; views from the course take in the Granite Dells, Mingus Mountain and Thumb Butte - major local landmarks.

Prescott finally has a classy public course. Well, it's semi-private, but that must also mean it's semi-public. At over 5400 feet elevation, Prescott Lakes has gorgeous views of the Granite Dells rock formations and San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff.

A few months ago, I wrote an article on Chaparral Pines, a private golf community in Payson, Ariz., touting it as next to perfect in terms of beauty and superb golf, ala Tom Weiskopf. Well, guess what? He's done it again, this time just minutes away from Prescott, an historic town about 90 minutes northwest of Phoenix.

Prescott Country Club, which is actually in Dewey, Arizona, about 15 minutes from the town of Prescott , is a public course quite popular with summer visitors. Prescott has a reasonably mild climate and is becoming quite a haven for Phoenix people who want to cool off without driving clear to Colorado or San Diego.
