Scottsdale Silverado Golf Club: Scottsdale's secret public golf course flies under the radar
If you're looking for a good cool-down course, a place to get in more golf before the sun sets, Scottsdale Silverado Golf Club is a good choice. This is also a great track to play that first round in the Valley of the Sun if your game's been in winter hibernation back home. Or if you simply want to lower your handicap, play Silverado several times.

Scottsdale-area Saguaro lives up to We-Ko-Pa Golf Club pedigree
Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw's new Saguaro course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club outside Scottsdale is radically different from the club's acclaimed original track, but every bit its equal.

Raven Golf Club at Verrado is at the outer limits of the Phoenix-Scottsdale resort corridor. It's a good hour from Scottsdale. You have to want to get to there to end up there. Go ahead. Gas up that rental. This is one golf course that's worth the trip.

Ever wonder what it would be like to play golf blind? To shoot into an abyss, unsure exactly what you're aiming at or how it's going to get there? Desert Canyon Golf Club in Fountain Hill, Arizona can give you a heck of a simulation. This course just outside North Scottsdale does for blind shots what "The Man Show" did for girls bouncing on trampolines: there can never be enough of them.

With a famous classic car auction, horse shows and a big-time rodeo, WestWorld would seem pretty set on attractions. But this being Scottsdale, they found one thing it desperately needed to be complete. Golf. There must be some hidden clause in the city charter about not being able to go more than 500 feet without stumbling across a golf course. For this city with a population of slightly less than 300,000 people has almost 200 golf courses.

Sometimes you're doomed by comparisons of circumstance. For quarterback Jim Kelly, it's being held up to that Joe Montana guy. For "Goodfellas" star Ray Liotta, it's the truth that James Gandolfini does it so much better. For Starfire at Scottsdale Country Club, it's as simple as its 85260 zip code. If Starfire was in Kansas City or even Prescott, Ariz., it would be worthy of plenty of attention. In the Phoenix-Scottsdale golf heaven resort corridor, this set of three nines with the Arnold Palmer imprint simply comes across as just another course.

That's right, Cypress Golf Course in Scttsdale, Arizona gives you golf for 10 bucks late in the day. The unexpected sometimes eventually does happen. In the case of Cypress, that means a 3,393-yard Long Nine par 36 or a 1,474-yard Short Nine par 29 for less than what some people drop at Starbucks in a day. The first time anyone shows up at Cypress and is asked for a mere 10 bucks to play there's often a lot of blank stares.

A player can read endless stories about TPC Scottsdale's Desert Course and never come across a mention of all the executive jets and small planes buzzing low overhead. However, with the TPC Desert Course right in the path of the runway at the nearby Scottsdale Airport, you'll quickly become aware of this long unmentioned fact. Still, provided you don't mind the occasional fly-by, the prices and quality of golf will make it a worthwhile round.

There's graffiti, weeds, broken concrete and smashed bottles. No, this isn't some inner-city course, it's in ritzy Scottsdale, Ariz. Welcome to Coronado Golf Course, an ugly duckling that runs through a highway and charges $12 a round. While it may be the worst course in Arizona, "people love this place," says local golfer George Phillips. When there was talk of razing it, "you would have thought they were trying to tear down the Sistine Chapel."

The Pine Course at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., would be worth playing if only for the look at Muirhead's architectural evolution. This track stands on its own merits, though, and surpasses any history lesson. In a Scottsdale area obsessed with spectacular desert shows, Pine sticks out as an almost unique take. The service at McCormick gives the Pines another boost - the staff goes out of their way to please.
