The Phoenician: Twenty-seven working-class holes at a world-class golf resort in Scottsdale
Here's the thing about The Phoenician: If golfers expect the three nine-hole golf courses to be as splendorous as the resort itself, they'll be disappointed. But if they don't mind a few extra par 3s, spectacular views and a few chance meetings with the group in the next fairway, they'll be happy they left the comforts of the resort behind to chase the little white ball around for a few hours, Scott Bordow writes from Scottsdale.

You don't just play golf on Kierland's 27 holes. You ride on Segways. You hear bagpipes. You enjoy the outdoor air conditioning. And when the day is done, you luxuriate at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, shop at the nearby outdoor mall, or dine at one of several outstanding restaurants within a five-minute drive. The South Course is the more traditional play of the two 18-hole layouts at Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, and it's also the more memorable. That's because of the sum of its parts instead of any handful of memorable holes, Brandon Tucker writes.

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club in Fort McDowell is as close to paradise as most golfers will find. No traffic, no housing. Just you, your clubs and the natural surroundings. "Players will feel like they are on their own golf couse -- they are that secluded," says Brett Trenter, general manager at We-Ko-Pa. The Talon course is shorter and less well known than its counterpart at Grayhawk Golf Club, the Raptor. But the Talon is no slouch, there's a reason it receives so many national accolades. It's a fantastic layout that builds to a big finish, with a back nine featuring several outstanding holes that will leave you talking. When visiting Scottsdale, you'll do yourself a disservice if you don't play Talon.

TPC Scottsdale's Champions course always will play second fiddle to its famous sister. But the more you play it, the more you'll appreciate its own attributes. Randy Heckenkemper did a tremendous job with the redesign, turning a boring layout into one of the more challenging tracks in the Valley, writes Scott Bordow.

The deserts of Arizona are the last place you'd expect to find an ode to the British Open. But that's exactly what golfers get when they play the Monument at Troon North. This isn't strict links golf, mind you - there are no seaside views, and the wind doesn't whip quite as hard as it does at Carnoustie. But this Weiskopf-Morrish design is a love song to the golf courses on the other side of the Atlantic.

Scottsdale has earned its reputation as a golf town with great scenery and long desert courses fit for PGA Tour pros - and amateurs in golf carts. But Troon North Golf Club's Pinnacle course is trying to change that reputation, thanks to a walker-friendly revamp and redesign.

When We-Ko-Pa first opened near Scottsdale in 2001, the golf course built its early legend largely on word of mouth buzz. Seven years later We-Ko-Pa's original course is now called Cholla Course, and it's ranked the 35th best public course in the entire country.

There are few truly original golf experiences left in Scottsdale. Talking Stick Golf Club is one of them. Neither course at Talking Stick sets out to beat you senseless with toughness or drain all the golf balls and fun you have in reserve.
