This is also a great track to play that first round in the Valley of the Sun if your game's been in winter hibernation back home. That's right, Cypress Golf Course in Scttsdale, Arizona gives you golf for 10 bucks late in the day. The unexpected sometimes eventually does happen.In the case of Cypress, that means a 3,393-yard Long Nine par 36 or a 1,474-yard Short Nine par 29 for less than what some people drop at Starbucks in a day. Welcome to Coronado Golf Course, an ugly duckling that runs through a highway and charges $12 a round. While it may be the worst course in Arizona, "people love this place," says local golfer George Phillips. When there was talk of razing it, "you would have thought they were trying to tear down the Sistine Chapel."

Muirhead's Pine Course at McCormick a look inside a mad design mind

The Pine Course at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., would be worth playing if only for the look at Muirhead's architectural evolution. This track stands on its own merits, though, and surpasses any history lesson. In a Scottsdale area obsessed with spectacular desert shows, Pine sticks out as an almost unique take. The service at McCormick gives the Pines another boost - the staff goes out of their way to please.
