Don't believe the diss: Papago Golf Course still delivers golfers a good Phoenix-Scottsdale bargain
Papago Golf Course is not close to one of the best municipal courses in the country. But it's a lot better than your average muni, and it's a course worth working into a Phoenix-Scottsdale vacation. Papago is an especially good bargain at twilight, and this is actually the best time to play it. There's just something about putting out under those buttes with the moon moving into the sky.

You're probably going to be surprised by how much you like the Adobe course at Arizona Biltmore Country Club in Phoenix. It's the antithesis of all the new, modern monster golf courses that are geared to bring average golfers to their knees. Instead, it lets you enjoy a leisurely round. This is a golf day where you'll actually breathe easy.

Take away that burst of publicity that centered on its men-only stance and Southern Dunes has passed largely uncommented upon. Internet searches do not yield any reviews of the course (until this one).

Every golf course's marketing campaign centers around some "unforgettable" holes. But really, how often do you head home certain you'll always remember a single hole, let alone a few holes? In a Phoenix-Scottsdale resort labyrinth with some 200 courses, these genuinely make Phantom Horse stick out.

Despite greens that would boggle Einstein, the Raven at South Mountain in Phoenix is a reasonably priced track that's liable to leave a smile on your face all year round. Here, an average hacker can get in a round without much serious trouble, while the competitive players can challenge themselves on several risk-reward holes (in short, it's a place where a bungling golf writer can follow an all-conference college hotshot and everyone feels comfortable).

PHOENIX, AZ (Oct. 15, 2002) -- Forced carries over cavernous dry washes, balls lost in prickly cactus, and plush green fairways contrasted against the jagged, purple outline of a barren mountain range. This is desert golf, and for many golfers it is the ultimate playing experience. Golf may have its roots in the towering hardwood trees and rolling hills of the Eastern seaboard and the Midwest, but the surreal landscapes of the desert Southwest have become a fantasyland for high end, daily fee and resort golf.

After playing some of the Phoenix area's more challenging courses, the Foothills Golf Club seems undaunting by comparison. However, it's still a fine play for the price. Built in 1988 from a design by Tom Weiskopf and Tom Morrish, the desert is always around; it just isn't as penalizing as some other desert courses are.

Change has been the name of the game at Vistal for some time now, and finally it seems to be paying off. The nines were swapped to make it easier for the staff to keep track of who is on the first tee. The tee boxes dropped from five sets to four, and the GPS units are gone from the carts. The prices are down, but the rounds are up, and this course remains a great test of golf in the Phoenix area.
