I live in British Columbia and think nothing of driving all the way to Phoenix and then Apache Junction to play what I believe to be two of the most interesting and challenging, as well as wonderfully manicured, golf courses in the state of Arizona.

I played the Trilogy at Vistancia course over Labor Day weekend this year. Greens were in very poor condition with bare spots, hundreds of ball marks and replanted areas of sod. Contrast that with We-Ko-Pa which was pristine for the same price. There are homes on a lot of the holes which can be hit if you are having a bad day.

Summer golf in Arizona separates the men from the boys. All my life I've heard stories about the Scottish and the extreme playing conditions that they take for granted. I used to think that they were the leather of our golf community until I teed it up with my usual threesome out at Camelback last week.

My wife and I own our own business and enjoy the luxury of several golfing vacations every year, thanks to some very good and trustworthy employees. We are in our early 50s. In order to afford to take that many golf trips, we are cost-conscious about where we stay and where we play. But golfing is our main reason to travel, so we are careful not to sacrifice the quality of courses we play.
