The beauty of the natural terrain and the way Jones fit the golf course into it is truly spectacular. Situated alongside the Santa Cruz River, the course meanders into the surrounding hillsides where the sunlight casts mystical purple and yellow shadows in the late afternoon. Holes 5 to 8 are considered one of the finest four hole stretches in the state, ending with the 439 yard No. 8. Teeing off from high on the hill, the fairway drops off twice before your long approach shot settles onto a green framed by a reed filled pond to the right and a gaping bunker to the left.

Go in good faith
All the negative reviews are correct, I play because the layout is good, and we take prefered lies and move our putts away
from the patches. For a cost of say 3 range buckets go and play.
Change your expectations and you wil enjoy the day.
Time Will Tell
Trying to be fair to all, I offer this course review. This was my first ever play at Rio Rico so I cannot comment on past glory or course conditions. On this day, I found a course that was, at best, only marginally playable. Due to overseeding, carts were not permitted on potential fairways and several greens were in the process of being aerated. Based on a sampling of past reviews, my expectations were not overly optimistic, but at full price, I did expect more than was presented. I would have been more comfortable with the chance to use the layout as a practice facility at half the rate that was charged. I commend the effort to return this course to the status of "a hidden gem of southern Arizona", but at present, the marketing of Rio Rico on Golfnow is misleading. While the staff was friendly, the overall experience was sub par. Someday, I hope to be able to return to this layout and discover that hidden gem, but my guess is that time and patience will be needed by all.
Average Course
Overall average course but in poor condition. Greens were full of weeds and had many bare spots. Fairways were soggy, muddy, and wet in many areas. Sprinkler system kept coming on while we were playing, soaking us a few times. TIP: Run sprinklers during the night when golfers aren't on the course!
WORST COURSE EVER PLAYED
Fairways look like cow pasture , brown, green and yellow and dirt compose the colors of the fairways with standing water in many spots . Started the round at 7 clock and sprinklers were going off and at 10 clock the sprinklers were still going off on the fairways. Broken sprinkler heads on fairways creating flooding on fairway . The greens were half grass and the other half dirt and weeds and when you putted the ball it looked liked a Mexican jumping bean bouncing up and down along the uneven surface of grass and dirt and weeds . Big holes on Fairways especially the 11 hole worse than the potholes in New York City . I am not a good golfer but this course made me a worse golfer as it did with my playing partners. NO MATTER THE COST AVOID THIS COURSE . You can go out in the dessert and beat the ball around and have just as frustrating time and it does not cost you anything. They should pay you to play this place . Feel sorry for the people who sign up for STAY AND PLAY PACKAGE AT RIO RICO RESORT. They will MAD, SAD AND FRUSTRATED. The layout of the course is excellent.
Needs some grass and TLC . Go to Kino Springs and enjoy a round of golf .
Beautiful setting of a course
Love this course. It is a beautiful setting. Pace of play is always great.
Tee times are fantastic.
Love this course. Set in a beautiful setting. Staff are great
The course still needs a lot of work
The course is not in very good condition. The fairways are still brown and thin. Many of the green have bare spots. There are puddles where the sprinkler heads are leaking. There is very little sand in the traps. The course may be playable by the beginning of the year.
Good Price, Bad Value
Although the watering of the course was more than adequate (cart path only due to muddy course) there were many bare spots in the fairways. The poorest area were the majority of the greens (very patchy and bumpy).
I won't be playing the Rio Rico course until it improves dramatically.
Sorry to see this former great fail.
They must not have done anything over the summer to maintain an attempt last year to get the course back on its feet. The greens are terrible. They recommend a two put and move on. The over seeding of the fairways is marginal. The havelenas are having a field day ripping everything up looking for grubs. It's too bad, because it is a terrific layout. We will give it a month, but it curently is on life support.
course is in pretty bad shape, but the beautiful surounding hills make up for it. i enjoy playing there even though the greens and fairways are a mess
course is a mess, fairways and greens need a lot of work, but I like playing there because of the surrounding hills
Disapointed Again
I have played this course for 7 years. The 1st 3 years 5-10 times a year. It then has gone down hill & I play it once a year hoping for improvement . It has only gotten worse. Don't waste even $10 to play this pasture.
This is the 1st ever negative review i given given any course.
Disappointing
Course in terrible condition both greens and fairways. We were Tod the course had been over seeded. It did not look like it had. Very disappointed.
Great layout, terrible greens
No complaints! It will be a wonderful course once again with some badly needed TLC
Not likely
this course has potential, however the fairways were dug up putting greens were half green and half dirt. Poor maintenance on the course throughout. If there was better up keep and a little more time and effort put into the grounds of this course, it would be very nice. I wouldn't reccomend the hour drive south of tucson.
RTJ should be rolling in his grave
Played this course last May and it was in good shape but now in September it has lost all shape of a golf course. The rough is so deep and full of weeds it makes finding a ball impossible. The greens are rough and bare making putting an adventure every time. Some weed control and sharp mowing blades would do wonders
Best I've seen it
Recent rains have made this the lushest I've ever seen it. beautiful course , beautiful day. Low low price for all you can play and fun time! No stress, unhurried-
What a shame
A little hard work and management this place would be incredible
Bring lots of extra golf balls!
The course was in very poor condition, compared to other AZ courses which experience the same weather and drought. Lost many golf balls in the fairways, as well as the rough! I had read mixed reviews about the condition of the course, but decided to give it a chance since it was stated that the new management had invested time and money to improve the course. But based on the condition of the course yesterday, I will not be returning in the near future, despite their good prices and discounted tee times.
Don't waste your money
not worth the money regarless how low the price is. There was no grass anywhere the course is total weeds including the greens we could only play 11 holes until we quit.
It is a lot better than the last time i play there
The greens on the back nine need more work but are playable.
It is a good prize the golf carts are new.
