The beauty of the natural terrain and the way Jones fit the golf course into it is truly spectacular. Situated alongside the Santa Cruz River, the course meanders into the surrounding hillsides where the sunlight casts mystical purple and yellow shadows in the late afternoon. Holes 5 to 8 are considered one of the finest four hole stretches in the state, ending with the 439 yard No. 8. Teeing off from high on the hill, the fairway drops off twice before your long approach shot settles onto a green framed by a reed filled pond to the right and a gaping bunker to the left.

Enchanting montain scenery.
Nice day spent in the southern Arizona. Forget all your problem and enjoy the layout.
very friendly stall.
As with all Robert Trent Jones courses you are rewarded for good shoots and are in trouble for bad. Don't try for the long ball on all holes. Play what the course will give you. Shot placement is very important. The wife and I had a very good day. Great way to spend the day in southern Arizona.
Not for serious golfers
I live 20 miles from the course and I had been getting negative feedback about the conditions there. My round confirmed everything I had heard. The fairways are pock marked with bare spots, the 'rough' is essentially hard pan, and the greens are worse than the fairways. If you're only out for the Arizona weather or the views (which are fantastic), it's fine. If you're out to play golf, stay away.
A Fivesome??? Gimme A Break!
No excuse to allow fivesomes on a busy golf day. We had to wait on EVERY shot on the back 9. The course is in mediocre condition so between a long wait on every shot and the conditions it was not a pleasant play at Rio Rico.
Making progress-kiddos to the course and the owners
I first played this course in October. It was worse than poor after years of neglect. Since then I have played this monthly and have watch the improvements unfold. Great progress has been made on the greens which were inputtable in October. Now they are all very puttable and getting better. My thanks to the new management for spending the money to upgrade this really challenging and delightful layout. As a result of the continued improvements, me and my friends will be back, even though we drive an hour from Sahuarita to get there.
Needs help
played here ten years ago and was looking forward to it. Proved a disappointment. Course in bad shape, facility lacked clean, working facilities. Would not come back.
Just say NO!
The golf specials will look enticing, but the golf course is in terrible condition. No grass in the fairways and the greens are rough also. IF you go, the lunch special is available for $7.95 and is the best feature of the course.
good value
good value - greens need improvement; they have empty spaces, but they putt ok.
Rio Rico not like it used to be
I have golfed this course many times over the last 20 years and it was always one of my favorites.. Unfortunately the last couple years things have changed for the worst. It's a great layout with some beautiful views. Hopefully someone will take it over and return it to it's prior condition. The y are priced very reasonable but you should expect poor conditions and slow play since the cost to play is getting people to give it a shot. A real shame for what use to be a wonderful course for a good price..
True Picture
I was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the course. the fairways were decent ; however the greens were by and large terrible. The staff on the course and in the restaurant were friendly and helpful. A good value for the money.
has great potential
the course in in ok condition, but the greens are very lumpy, and really need some serious attention. I understand that this is a large expense, but if you corrected this one very important feature I predict that you would attract hundreds of golfers.
Nice layout.
Some great views. Fairways & greens in rough shape. Heard they have new owner and working to get course in shape. Practice your sand shots before playing the course.
GOOD LAYOUT
The greens were in very poor condition. Very difficult to stroke a putt with out the ball jumping several times.
Won't go back
If this is a Robert Trent Jones design he must have done it when he was a kid. I guess the bunkers, which are fairly well placed and numerous (and large) are typical of his design but beyond that it was very straight forward. The course condition was very poor. They mentioned that they had fungus problems and the greens were very rough. The rest of the course was rough too. You were constantly dodging pot holes all over the course. Over seeding hadn't established much at all so bare lies was the common condition. I prefer grass.
Great possibilites
I love Rio Rico golf course. It is scenic and challenging but, needs some care. The fairways are fair but the greens are in terrible condition with pits, bare spots and a real challenge to putt with any kind of proficiency. Most of the ball washers were either empty or broken. the bunkers need some work as most need sand. Unlike last year, when a shot into the rough usually meant losing your ball, the rough has been cut making errant balls easier to find. Overall, with some care and maintenance, Rio Rico is a fun course to play.
Great day
I would have said something about the dry dry conditions, the sad shape of the greens, etc, but I golfed the best round of 2014! Soooo....all is good!
Great design
This course is a jewel which has seen better days; more detail to greens and aprons will do wonders for play
3.2star rating
course has seen much better days. maybe the cold weather got to it? greens were garbage and traps (like many courses) were hard pan dirt. sand traps need to be taken out of golf! in general, courses dont maintain them! sad to see a nice place go downhill! couple years ago i loved rio rico!
