Consistently inconsistent
I have played Vistal a number of times... A year or so ago, I swore I would never go back and then a playing partner told me it was in good shape, so I played it again. At that time it was in reasonable shape so I went back this weekend. The course looked like nobody had done maintenance on it for weeks. Greens were nasty and the fairways rival the old days when it was Thunderbird (in its decline).
It's too bad that for whatever reasons Vistal won't invest in keeping the course in shape. It is unlikely I am going to gamble on this course again. RIP.
Good view with low winter rates
I liked this course due the amount of challenging holes with four sets of tees to satisfy any skill level.
One of the harder courses that I have played to keep your head down with all the great views of South Mountain and the valley below. The rates we paid for this time of year along with course condition (very average) makes it good solid deal to get out with your friends and have a good time golfing and having a few beers and some decent food at the snack bar. I will be back soon.
Mountain views
Course was beautiful. Well manicured. Better than I expected. Greens were a challenge. Staff and facility couldn't have been better. Can't wait to come back.
This course is in bad shape, barely a golf course.
I haven't played this course in some time and now I remember why. It's worse than it was the last time I played. Greens are in bad shape, sand traps are non-existent, tee boxes are a mess like they haven't had attention in days, broken tees and debris everywhere. I'm surprised they charge as much as they do. I don't think I'll ever play here again. Sad, this used to be a nice golf course, removal of fairway sand traps, greens are in bad shape and extreme lack of maintenance has ruined the course, almost like it is on purpose, like lets see how many people will still pay to play here if we do nothing.
Good course but needs some improvements
The course is an excellent layout but needs to be maintained better. It could be a real gem with a little more care. Could also use divot repair bottles on the carts, more markings for distance or GPS units on the carts. Very friendly staff and course facilities (like washrooms, water). I will be back!!
Vistal review
The course was in average to good condition. Tee boxes and fairways were good ,but the greens ,not so good. They need work. They were flat and green but the grass is very thin. This course offers some very challenging holes. It also has many and varied "looks" to it.The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The "Blue Pig" restaurant has some very good "course" food.
Overall;A very nice place to play .A great place for the money!!
Poor Condition
The tee boxes were in poor condition. The greens were hard a bumpy. Fairway were rough. No sand on carts to replace divots. Bunkers are very deep with little sand in them. Food very expensive
Great deal!!!
Best course in the valley for the money ($39 for late morning tee time), especially during this time of the year, when even mediocre tracks are commanding $75+. Going back soon.
A true Dichotomy - Such wasted potential
Visual is such a dichotomy. The layout and views are outstanding as was the staff friendliness. The amenities are very good: attendants to unload/load your bags and wash clubs at end of the round, nice practice facility, convenient snack bar with good variety, very frequent and well stocked beverage cart service. Now for the opposite side of things. The course condition is TERRIBLE. the greens are so thin on grass. They needed to use 3-4 times more grass seed at overseed time. The tee boxes are butchered up with divots and there are no sand/seed containers on the the tee boxes so the golfers can help with repairs. For a course that only over seeds tees and greens, you would expect them to be excellent and they are just the opposite. The fairways are in fair condition at best. Since they are not over seeded, I had pretty low expectations and got about what I expected. Again there are lots and lots of divots because there are no seed bottles on the carts.
If you want a really inexpensive course with great views and could care less about course condition, then Vistal is okay. If you are a serious golfer who wants nice conditions and is willing to pay a few bucks extra, try somewhere else. Personally, I wish they would raise green fees $5-10 and put every penny of it back into course maintenance. Vistal could be such a wonderful course.
Tip to those who play: wet a towel before you start, because you can't find a ball washer on the entire course!
Change the name
The course looks nice from the street but then you find out that they don't overseed for the winter season. The fairways were dormant bermuda grass that they spray with a green dye. They should call it Painted Fairways.
Negative reviews are a bit too negative
Yes, it's not overseeded and yes the fairways are painted. But it's totally playable, the greens are in pretty decent shape, and the views of South Mountain and the city are phenomenal. It's a fun layout and a good value for Feb in the valley.
What happened?
This course has such potential and used to be a great course when it was Thunderbird GC. The fairways and greens were very spotty and a fair putt was never possible as the ball bounced with every roll. I don't plan on coming back unless the rates come down and the ridiculous prices of food come down as well. Maybe decrease these prices and hire a greens keeper to bring it back the way it once was. The pace of play was great but there was nothing to look forward to
Had a great time!
The course has a terrific layout with an amazingly friendly staff. My guests and I had a wonderful time as the course is challenging yet playable.
The conditions of the greens are poor and most fairways and transition areas are below fair. The weather has been mild so there should be little excuse for better turf/landscape conditions.
Michael Groothoff
Needs to over seed, and cut the fairways a little shorter
Terrible Conditions for the Winter time
The cousre was not in great shape. The fairways appeared to be spray painted and the greens were in horrible shape. The first hole had a lot of deep dirt patches.
The pace of play was also exteremly long. Finished in just over 5 hours.
Fair value
The greens were painted sand the fairways were painted dead grass. But the price made it a good value, if you simply want to hit your ball and play a round of golf.
Not Likely to play again
Besides the items rated above the good is the views of the City. The bad is poorly designed, unfair holes (e.g. firm, uphill, elevated greens which in some areas are not much more than 10 yards deep, minimal fringe then unplayable mountain desert. Also had many tees 20 yards +/- up which is not conducive to a fair score for handicap purposes.
