Chip Shot: Superstar talent combined with Tucson's marvelous weather makes this the perfect event for watching the best women golfers in the world.

Tucson, Az - Every spring one of the LPGA's best tournaments rolls into the Old Pueblo showcasing the world's great women golfers. This year's no exception, boasting a top-notch field at one of Tucson's finest courses. Here's a preview look at an excellent week of golf.

The Defending Champion: Last year Juli Inkster used the Welch's/Circle K Championship as a springboard for one of the spectacular years in the history of the LPGA, which earned her a place in the LPGA Hall of Fame. This year she's determined to retain her status as champion, but the other top players on Tour are thinking otherwise.

The Field: Inkster is not the only Hall of Famer scheduled to appear. Patty Sheehan and Nancy Lopez are looking to regain their past glory against new Tour superstars like Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb. Longtime Tucson visitors Kelly Robbins, Betsy King, and Laura Davies will be in attendance as well.

Further, the Wildcat contingent should be strong, with '98 champ Helen Alfredsson, Kris Johnson, Cindy Flom (formerly Rarick), Leta Lindley, and Marissa Baena. Former Sun Devil and superstar-in-waiting Grace Park and Korean sensation Se Ri Pak may also be in attendance. Finally, don't be surprised if current Wildcat Christina Baena, Marissa's sister, qualifies and is on the leaderboard come Sunday.

The Course: Randolph North Golf Course is one of the finest municipal courses in Arizona. Tree-lined fairways and small greens make this an accurate player's delight. Three of the par 5's are reachable in two with well struck shots. Every year, though, it comes down to who can make the most putts from inside 20 feet. The greens only roll nine on the stimpmeter so the players can be really aggressive on putts.

Viewing: The order that the two nines are played have been reversed from regular public play, making for a very exciting finish. The 440-yard, par 5 #18 is reachable in two by the entire field. Water crosses the fairway at 60 yards, but it will only come into play if the tee shot goes onto #9's parallel fairway and she has to hit back to #18 fairway.

Large bleachers surrounding the finishing hole provide an excellent place to catch the exciting action. Further, a hand operated scoreboard tells how the leaders played each hole so you're always up-to-date.

Tickets: All events through Tuesday are free. Beginning on Wednesday it's $10 a day. Seniors, though, get in free for Wednesday's Pro-Am and receive a $5 discount for the tournament days. Children 17-and-under are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Free parking is available at Park Mall, with shuttles running all day.

Parting Shot: The events begin on Sunday March 5 with the Celebrity Pro-Am and continue throughout the week, culminating in Sunday's final round. With all of the great players in attendance it's impossible to predict who will win. However, it's a good bet that at least one of the host of former Wildcats will be vying for the winner's trophy on Sunday afternoon.
