GREEN VALLEY, AZ - Green Valley may have a reputation as only a retirement community, but because of that, the cost of greens fees is very reasonable in an otherwise pricey golf climate.

Even in the "season", one would be hard pressed to exceed $60.00 for golf and a cart, and more typically $45.00 to $55.00. If you're a "senior", Torres Blancas offers discounts all year.

Not to dwell on greens fees, but let's face it, three or four days of golf for two can add up to more than a house payment-especially in Phoenix and Tucson. However, Green Valley is a nice little community with reasonably priced hotels/motels and restaurants to accompany the half-dozen public golf courses that are within a mile or two of each other.

Probably, the most interesting of the courses is San Ignacio Golf Club, which is located on 4201 S. Camino del Sol, 520-648-3468. The yardages vary from the red tees at 5200 to the back tees of 6704, with coordinating slopes of 125 to 135. The course can play very tight, accentuated by fairways sloping into some real nasty flora and fauna.

Review: San Ignacio Golf Club
Past reviews by Maggie Edwards

Speaking of flora and fauna, since the course was quite crowded and waiting on every shot was the norm, it was interesting to notice the variety of wildlife and birds. The course designer, Arthur Hills, took great pains to leave the natural vegetation, so it was like being in a wildlife refuge on certain holes.

A bobcat sauntered across number 16 fairway, apparently oblivious to the flying golf balls.

San Ignacio offers elevation, some water, narrow fairways and nice bent grass greens. Number 13 is the signature hole, par 5 which boasts an elevated tee box with water wrapping around the entire left side. It's possible to get on in two, but chancy if the drive is not well placed. It's also the number two handicap hole for both men and women.

San Ignacio
San Ignacio
San Ignacio is a fair golf course which is in very good shape. It was recently purchased by IRI, International Realty Investors. There is a practice facility and a restaurant with a nice outdoor patio for lunch or 19th hole drinks. The staff are friendly, and the pro shop has a decent variety of clothes for men and women.

About a mile away, on the other side of I-19, is a newer course called Torres Blancas. It's much flatter than San Ignacio and is already lined with many new houses and patio homes. Next door is an assisted living complex which actually looks like a new hotel.

Torres Blancas
Torres Blancas
Torres Blancas is a fun course to play, albeit not as challenging as San Ignacio. What you see is what you get, and the most interesting holes are the last three, which offer some water. The fifteenth hole is a pretty little par three signature hole with a backdrop of the mountains and a water feature.

The greens are decent, and the course was in good condition. The yardage for women is only 5077, followed by 5951, 637l and 6894. The slopes are as low as 114 and as high as 125.

Torres Blancas has its own membership which is a screaming deal--$3,500 annually for husband and wife and $2,000 for a single, which includes unlimited golf. For the general public, greens fees run from $25 to $60, depending on the season, with a discount for seniors.

The clubhouse is very nice, and the restaurant is much fancier than the public links norm. Looks like a nice place to dress up and have dinner. Torres Blancas is located at 3233 S. Abrego Dr. in Green Valley, 520-625-5200.

As a footnote, one other great thing about the Green Valley area, including Tubac and Rio Rico, is the tee time policy. You call; you make your time; you hang up; you show up. They never ask you for a credit card to hold the time-let's just hope people call to cancel ahead of time so this honor system can continue!
