UA Notepad: Wildcats finish out millennium with 6th place finish

Recap from the Nelson Invitational

TUCSON (Nov. 2, 1999) - The UA men’s team couldn’t finish off the 1900’s with a win, but a 6th-place finish cemented the Wildcats’ odds of starting the next one off on the right foot…as long as senior Derek Gillespie doesn’t decide to transfer.

Just one week after the Arizona women finished disappointingly in Palo Alto, Calif., home of the Stanford Cardinal, the UA men came home with a 6th-place finish in the Nelson Invitational. The Wildcats, led by senior Derek Gillespie, finished the tournament with a total of 860, just 13 strokes shy of the host Cardinal, who took the tournament with an 847 finish.

Individually, Tulsa’s Martin Miritz won the tournament, legging out Northwestern’s Jess Daley with a 203, 10 over par.

Individually, the Wildcats were led by senior Derek Gillespie, who led UA with a 4th-place, 210 score, three strokes under par. Ricky Barnes finished just one stroke behind Gillespie, but, strangely, came in 10th place. Cody Beyer finished four-over par with a 217. Reid Hatley logged a 227 for the weekend, coming in 83rd. Patrick Norris finished 97th overall, last for the Wildcats with an 18-over par 231.

The worst round for any Wildcat belonged to Norris, whose second-round 80 butchered an otherwise-tremendous first round score of 73. The best round belonged to the most reliable Wildcat, Gillespie, who racked a Wildcat-high 68 in the first round.

The Nelson Invitational brought an end to the fall portion of the Wildcat golf season. UA begins its spring “semester” at home January 31st and February 1st at Tucson’s Raven Golf Club. The Ping Arizona International will be the UA’s first opportunity to improve on an otherwise unsteady first half.

The Wildcats finished off the tournament with a 289-279-292, for a total of 860 over the Par-71, 6,756 yard Stanford Golf Course.
