TUCSON - The University of Arizona womens golf team, ranked
second in the country, finished in a disappointing fifth place at
this years Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate Tournament.
The tournament, which included the cream of the crop of womens
golf teams, is highly touted as one of the countrys most
prestigious tournaments.
Junior Jenna Daniels, previously ranked No. 2 in the country,
surged in the tournaments final day, rising from 18th place.
Daniels finished eighth with a 218, two over par.
The rest of the Wildcat team finished respectably, considering
the overall squads performance. Senior Jill Gomric finished
in 10th place with a 220, four over par.
Christina Baena, the sophomore surprise of the new season, rose
from 35th place to finish 18th. Julia Kraschinski finished 51st,
while Christina Monteiro placed last on the Arizona team, finishing
with a 235, 19 over par.
The first day of the tournament saw the Wildcats come in fourth
place, shooting a team 298, 10 over par. Senior Jill Gomric, surprisingly,
shared the individual lead through the first round with a 2-under-par
70. Pepperdine led the first round, with Tulsa and California taking
second and third, respectively.
Day two saw the Wildcats slip one notch to fifth place, shooting
a 597. Gomric slipped to ninth place, while Daniels dropped to
eighteenth. Tulsa won the tournament, with Pepperdine, Arizona
State, and New Mexico State finishing second through fourth.
Only a great final day salvaged the tournament for UA.
The UA womens golf program will lay dormant until the
weekend of November 5-7, as they head to Hilton Head, South Carolina,
for the Golf World Invitational.
