TUCSON - Whats new with the UA golf program? Well, glad you
asked. In a trend that is becoming an all too familiar sight on
campus at the University of Arizona, the mens and womens
teams appear to be heading in different directions.
The UA men returned from last weekends Jerry Pate Intercollegiate
tournament in Birmingham, Ala., with a 7th place finish. Ricky
Barnes and Derek Gillespie led the Wildcats, tying for a disappointing
18th place overall. The two shot a 214, 2 over par for the tournament.
Clemson left the Old Overton Club victorious, by the way, after
winning a two-hole playoff against Nevada-Las Vegas. The Wildcats
finished 20 strokes behind the lead as a team, shooting a combined
855.
Other Wildcat golfers on the leaderboard included Reid Hadley,
who finished 23rd, Patrick Norris (36th), and Scott Moore (42nd).
The UA women return to action for the first time in nearly a
month this weekend as the Wildcats, ranked second in the nation,
head to Palo Alto to compete in the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate
tournament, at the Stanford Golf Course. The Wildcats are the
defending champs of the tournament.
The three-day tournament starts Friday morning. The Stanford/Pepsi
Intercollegiate is being billed as one of UA's toughest tournaments
all season due to the fact that 10 of the nations top 25 teams
will be taking part.
Aside from the second-ranked Wildcats, other teams that will
be competing include No. 4 ASU, No. 5 Stanford, No. 9 UCLA, No.
10 Oregon, No. 14 New Mexico State, No.19 Jose State, 23rd-ranked
Washington, and the 24th-ranked Oregon State Beavers.
The Wildcats will rely heavily on their three top-25 individual
players.
Currently, senior Jenna Daniels is ranked 2nd in the nation
with a 72.16 per round average.
Sophomore Christina Baena is right on Daniels tail with
a meager 72.5 average, 12th in the nation. Senior Jill Gomric
is ranked 18th.
