Phantom Horse GC in Phoenix, AZ

The 12th hole at Phoenix's Phantom Horse Golf Club is called the Jailhouse Steps, for the stack of bunkers guarding this dogleg par 5's green - three long, long traps piled one after the other on a hill, with the green on the ridge up above. As Director of Golf Jim Fossenkemper says, "If you get into those bunkers, you might not ever get out."

In a Phoenix-Scottsdale resort labyrinth with some 200 golf courses, such distinctive holes makes Phantom Horse stick out. It's a short course by modern monster standards (6,336 yards), with some tight fairways. A 2002 renovation put the 18th's island green (for which the hole is dubbed Alcatraz) right near the clubhouse, so people sitting at the outdoor bar can enjoy the spectacle of watching your shot reach or splash.
