Just north of Phoenix, in an area normally known for its pricey private courses, golfers will find the spectacularly scenic Dove Valley Ranch, as close to a country club as public courses get. Throw in a one-of-a-kind saloon stop and you have one of the most memorable days of golf in Arizona.
Located just east of Scotssdale in Fountain Hills, Eagle Mountain has panoramic views of the mountain surrouding the Valley of the Sun. Course designer Scott Miller made a point to uphold the desert tranquility while testing the golfer’s talents with elevation, rolling hills and undulations.
About an hour from Scottsdale located in the foothills of the Sierra Estrella Mountains is Estrella Mountain Ranch Golf Club. Jack Nicklaus II designed this modern desert gem, and is a very imaginative design.
Designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, this beautiful facility is tucked away in the craggy ridges and buttes of South Mountain. Its wide rolling fairways are irresistible! This championship course is a picturesque golf paradise and definitely worth your consideration.
Dinosaur Mountain, designed by Ken Kavanaugh and opened in 1982, is often touted as one of the best public golf courses in Arizona. It has some of the most dramatic elevation changes in Arizona golf, and you would struggle to find a golf course in the state that is in better condition. Controlling your yardage can be tricky, but the scenery more than makes up for any of the golf course’s challenge.
The Sidewinder course is the newest run at Gold Canyon and is worth a stop, especially if you’re planning to play its more acclaimed neighbor, Dinosaur Mountain. With some of the same scenery, Sidewinder offers a few more opportunities to score, with some very accessible par 3s and par 4s. Sidewinder has only two holes with water, but a handful with ravines.
Scottsdale's acclaimed Grayhawk Golf Club offers two of the Southwest's most enjoyable and challenging golf experiences, Raptor course being just one of them.
This facility has two dynamic eighteen hole courses. These desert courses have an ample amount of rough lining their wide-open tifdwarf fairways.
Pete Dye designed this course which features dramatically rolling fairways bordered by lush mounding and Dye's signature use of railroad ties and hidden bunkers.

Raven Golf Club at Verrado is an upscale desert layout designed by John Fought and Tom Lehman that opened for public play in January 2004. John Fought and Tom Lehman collaborated on the Raven at Verrado Golf Club, a voluptuous design that meanders through the old Caterpillar bulldozer proving grounds.
Built on the western slope of Scottsdale's McDowell, Sanctuary is a stunning 18-hole daily-fee golf course designed by Randy Heckenkemper. The 6,624-yard, par-71 layout provides a haven for native plants and wildlife. Sanctuary is an entertaining challenge that demands intelligent course management at every hole.
In the sizzling summer heat of Phoenix and Tucson, Sedona can be up to 15 degrees cooler. Sedona is also at the perfect elevation to keep the snow away except for a few days a year, meaning almost year-round golf. The course's elevation ranges from 4,000-4,350 feet.
SunRidge Canyon Golf Club's beautiful layout winds among the foothills the McDowell Mountains. Nestled between the canyon walls, it at times seems like the missing piece to a beautiful golf course puzzle that evolved over millions of years in the Sonoran Desert.

The Monument course is widely considered Troon North’s signature course, a 7,028-yard test that winds through desert replete with arroyos, natural washes, huge saguaros, mesquite and ironweed. The fairways are lush and well-maintained, and the greens are large and tricky. Many tees are set like pedestals perched above the fairways.
The back-nine at Troon North’s Pinnacle course includes two long, demanding, rocky par 3s that help to set up a dramatic finish at the golf course’s signature hole, the 407-yard par-4 18th, which features a tee shot directly at Pinnacle Peak, and requires a 250-yard carry over a monstrous fairway-wide bunker.
The Canyon Golf Course winds through the inspiring beauty of Esperro Canyon and incorporates the massive rock formation known as Whaleback Rock.
A classic desert-style, target course, the Mountain has many changes in elevation and several elevated tees. Putting is a challenge because the greens are undulating and typically fast.
The Cholla course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club is the original, Scott Miller design that plays to a challenging 7,225 yards from the tips. Though perhaps more challenging than the neighboring Saguaro, the Cholla features more forced carries but less bunkers, only 75 of them spread over the entire golf course. You’re far more likely to contend with the natural sand of the surrounding Sonora desert.
The Saguaro course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club is one of the newer golf courses in Scottsdale’s golf resort corridor, having opened at the beginning of 2006. A Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design, it’s not a golf course where you can swing hesitantly: You need to be sure of your golf shots, and commit to them. Fairways and greens are maintained in excellent condition, and it’s a walker’s dream of a golf course.
