Two Former ASU Golfers, Current Coach
Named To Golf World's All-Century Team: Mickelson, Ward
and Vollstedt honored for collegiate accomplishments

TEMPE, AZ-- In a special issue celebrating collegiate golf, Golf
Worldmagazine named Arizona State alumni Phil Mickelson and Wendy
Ward to its list of Top 10 College Golfers of the 20th Century,
while ASU women's Head Coach Linda Vollstedt was honored on a similar
list acknowledging outstanding coaches.
Mickelson, ranked #2 all-time by Golf World, starred for the Sun
Devils from 1989 to 1992.
He is one of five players in history to capture three NCAA Individual
titles, and the only golfer to do so in both his freshman and sophomore
seasons. Mickelson was also Pac-10 Player of the year three times
while winning more individual collegiate titles (16) than any golfer
in ASU history. Arizona State finished no lower than fifth at the
National Championships during his brilliant career, capturing the
NCAA crown in 1990.
The San Diego, Calif., native is currently one of the most recognizable
faces on the PGA Tour, and was a member on the 1999 U.S. Ryder Cup
Team.
A three-time All-American, Ward helped lead the ASU women's golf team
to three consecutive NCAA Championships from 1993 to 1995. This two-time
Pac-10 Conference Medalist was selected as the 10th best collegiate
player ever by Golf World.
Ward captured the 1994 U.S. Amateur Title in 1994, and is currently
enjoying a successful career on the LPGA tour.
Ward's coach at Arizona State was Linda Vollstedt, who has guided
the Devils to six NCAA crowns including five in the past seven years.
She has coached four NCAA Individual Champions and 37 All-Americans
during her 19 years in Tempe, and led ASU to nine conference championships.
Vollstedt was the highest-ranked woman on Golf World'slist of Top
10 College Golf Coaches of the 20th Century at #4 overall.
Texas' Ben Crenshaw and Dave Williams of the University of Houston
were honored as the top collegiate golfer and coach of the century,
respectively.
