EDEN, Utah (September 30, 1999) Utah’s 12-person team, at the ninth annual Arizona/Utah "Shootout" at Wolfcreek Resort, braved 59-degree temperatures to edge Arizona 37-35 in the closest "Shootout" on record.

Arizona beat Utah 37.5 to 34.5 in 1992 at Troon Country Club. Utah leads 5-4 in the overall series and has won all five times on home soil. Eight at large members, two seniors and two women represented each state.

Utah overcame frost delays on the first day of competition to edge Arizona 10-8 in the Four Ball matches and 9.5 to 8.5 in the Foursome matches, but Arizona rallied to win the individual matches 18.5 to 17.5. Strong play from Bill Brafford, 68, of Mesa, Michael Spiher, 29, of Tempe, Jeff Peterson, 36, of Tucson, Kris Montplaisir, 40, of Gilbert and Missy Farr-Kaye, 32, of Scottsdale led the comback.. The five players combined for 11.5 points in individual play.

Prescott’s Marty James, 26, and Tucson’s Tom Beach, 44, whitewashed their opponents in the Four Ball and Foursome matches, earning six points, while John Olive and Brad Cannon of Phoenix earned five points in team play.

Olive, a 54-year-old retired real estate developer, and Cannon, a 23-year-old former Arizona State University player, totaled 2.5 points between them in individual play. Beach, the president of the Arizona Golf Association, playing in his fourth "Shootout", earned 4.5 total points and now has 14 points overall, the fourth most behind Erik Nielsen, Jeff Kern and Brafford.

Captain’s James Waitt and Rayl Evans, the treasurer of the AGA’s executive committee, accompanied the team. Evans has been either a player or captain during all nine years of the "Shootout".

Total cumulative team points during the nine years show Utah leading 331.5 to 316.5 over its southern neighbors. The 10th annual "Shootout" is scheduled at Pinnacle Peak Country Club in Scottsdale.
