GolfArizona.com Staff Report PAYSON, Ariz. -Two of Arizona's premier private country clubs, the Golf Club at Chaparral Pines, designed by David Graham and Gary Panks and the Jay Morrish-designed Rim Club in Payson, play host to the 19th Annual Trans-Mississippi Four-Ball Championship Sept. 14-16. Amateur golfers from all over the country, including Mike Podolak from North Dakota, the winner of the 96th Trans-Mississippi Championship, will visit the Grand Canyon State. Arizona will field 20 teams in the competition, last held in Arizona at Troon Golf and Country Club in 1993. Four-time Arizona Amateur Champion Mark Sollenberger teamed with Dennis Saunders to win the event in 1988, also at Troon Golf and CC and Phoenix Country Club hosted the Trans-Miss Four-Ball in 1984. Only Texas (five times) has held the tournament more than Arizona in its 19-year existence. For the first time, the event has a Senior Division because of the availability of tee times. Phoenix Suns basketball coach Danny Ainge, who owns a second home at Chaparral Pines, is paired with John Perkinson, owner of the Inn at Payson. Past locations for the Trans-Mississippi Four-Ball Championship have included Pumpkin Ridge last year, PGA West in 1986, the Broadmoor in 1996 and Southern Hills in 1992. The Trans-Mississippi Golf Association, founded in 1900, is one of the oldest golf organizations in the United States. Related links: |
