Arizona Golf Association Announces Staff Changes

PHOENIX—(Dec. 1, 1999) The board of directors of the Arizona Golf Association, headquartered near Glendale and 16th Street in Phoenix, has announced staff changes and promotions for its 13-person full-time office staff.

James Waitt, 32, who served as the director of marketing for the AGA during 1999, has been named director of rules and competitions. In his new position Waitt will oversee the entire AGA tournament program and continue his marketing role.

A University of Northern Colorado graduate, Waitt started with the AGA as in intern in 1994. He directed tournament operations for three years as well as the member services department. The success and growth of AGA tournament operations is largely attributable to his work.

Sean O’Malley, 28, a University of Arizona graduate and the AGA’s P.J. Boatwright Jr. Intern the previous six months, has been promoted to course rating manager. Besides assisting with tournament operations under Waitt’s guidance, O’Malley is responsible for lasering and rating new golf courses and re-rating existing courses.

Jamie Wagner, 27, previously the executive director of the Arizona Women’s Golf Association and an alumnus of New Mexico State, was hired full-time as operations manager this summer. Wagner will assist with tournaments and help coordinate the implementation of the new handicap system for the AGA.

Minnesota native and Chandler resident Lois Martens was named executive assistant to executive director Ed Gowan in November. Martens served in a similar capacity for the Minnesota Vikings before moving to Arizona.

Barbara Hannah was hired as a receptionist in July and Karen Simpson, a Central Arizona College alumna who recently relocated to the Valley from San Francisco, is the AGA’s accountant.

The Arizona Golf Association's mission is to foster the enhancement and expansion of the game of golf by leading in the development of member and information services, the promotion of opportunities for all who want to play, and the protection of the game's integrity and valued traditions.
